That’s the gap the Start-Up Business Advisor (SUBA) service was built to fill, and as of this year, it’s fully available to entrepreneurs right here in Golden.
SUBA is a free advisory program delivered by Community Futures Central Kootenay, with funding support from ETSI-BC. It’s built for entrepreneurs who are close to launch — whether that means finalizing a business plan before opening day or steadying a business that just opened its doors.

Golden’s business support landscape has always had a lot of good pieces — WorkBC’s Self-Employment Program for people just starting out, the Basin Business Advisors Scaling Program for businesses ready to grow, The Golden Chamber of Commerce for a multitude of member benefits. SUBA is the bridge between them: support for the entrepreneurs who’ve outgrown one program but aren’t quite ready for the next.
It’s also now available across the whole Kootenay-Boundary region — Golden, Cranbrook, Fernie, Nelson, Castlegar, Nakusp, Trail, Rossland, Grand Forks, and the rural communities in between — which means Golden entrepreneurs are plugged into a much bigger network of local business expertise than before.
Every entrepreneur who applies starts with intake coordinator Sasha Stout, who assesses fit and eligibility. From there, eligible applicants are matched with three 1:1 sessions with Amber McGregor, the Start-Up Business Advisor.
Amber has spent more than 20 years helping entrepreneurs across the region test, launch, and grow their businesses. She knows the local landscape and the particular challenges founders face in a place like Golden — seasonal swings, distance from bigger markets, a small but tight-knit customer base.
“We’re eager to collaborate to make a meaningful impact on the success of local businesses,” says Amber. “Her approach is rooted in practical, real-world guidance, offering every entrepreneur she works with dedicated support to move their vision into a viable, sustainable business.”
