Golden Community Economic Development (Golden CED) is proud to announce the start of construction of the Downtown Housing Project. The project is a community owned and operated development that will bring 27 new affordable rental homes and five small commercial spaces to the heart of downtown Golden.
This landmark project is more than a building – it’s an investment in people, in community, and in the future of Golden.
Located at 527 9th Avenue North, the new development will feature a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments for residents with low to moderate incomes. Attention to energy-efficient design and thoughtfully planned features including fully accessible units will make these apartments long-term homes for Golden’s workforce, small families, and seniors. The ground floor will include five small commercial rental spaces to foster local enterprise and contribute to the vitality of the historic downtown core.
“Today’s groundbreaking represents a tremendous achievement,” says Jill Dewtie, Golden CED Executive Director. “We’ve reached this milestone thanks to the perseverance of our board, staff, and dedicated supporters.”
Golden CED and the Town of Golden have worked together over several years to bring this vision to life. In 2022, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed outlining the Town’s intention to sell the municipally-owned land at a discounted rate to support the creation of affordable housing.
“We’re thrilled to see construction start on this important project,” says Mayor Oszust on behalf of Town Council. “We know there is a need for affordable housing in Golden, and we’ve been eager for a partner to step forward and bring an affordable housing project to life.
The addition of these new units will help ensure that residents have more access to housing so that they can continue to live, work, and play in Golden.” The Downtown Housing Project aligns with the Town’s Official Community Plan, which emphasizes downtown revitalization and diverse, sustainable housing options close to amenities and services. It represents a major step forward in Golden’s efforts to strengthen community resilience and well-being.
Construction is scheduled to commence later this month, marking a new chapter in affordable community-owned rental housing for residents of Golden.
